What does the Scuba Skills Update course in Gozo look like?

The Scuba Skills Update programme is designed for those, who have not had a chance to dive for a longer time, usually a year or two and want to refresh their skills before going back to exploring the underwater world.

Knowledge

The knowledge part is based on an accessible digital manual that you can read on your computer or in an app on your mobile phone. We can make it available to you even before you arrive to give you more time to process the knowledge.

Each chapter of the manual ends with review questions to help find out if you understand everything. In addition, you also have our instructors to discuss the most important issues with you and clarify any doubts. The goal is for you to revise the essential aspects of diving knowledge, to make sure you understand everything you need in order to dive safely.

Practice

We will take you diving to a shallow and easy dive site, where we will start from practicing skills with you in shallow water. Once you remind yourself how to do the basics and you feel comfortable, we will progress into a bit deeper water and practice more.

We will do two sessions in the water, each around an hour and there are two scenarios for them:

  1. If everything goes well, we will spend the first session on practicing skills in shallow and deeper water and then, after a short break, take you for a 40 – 50 min dive. That way, apart from just practicing skills, you will also have a chance to apply them during a dive.

  1. If we determine that you require more time to practice in shallow or deeper water, we will spend both sessions practicing the skills you need and skip the optional dive. Because the whole idea of the Scuba Skills Update is to help you get back into diving and make you ready, not to take you on a dive on the day of the course.

Any certified diver who hasn’t dived in a while or feels they need a skills refresher should consider this course. It’s ideal for divers who want to boost confidence and ensure safe diving practices.

How long does the Scuba Skills Update course take?

The course usually lasts around 4 hours, depending on the diver’s knowledge, skill level and comfort. It consists of a 1-2 hour knowledge refresher session and a practical part in the water that usually takes around 2 hours. Some courses may take a bit longer if the diver needs more time to review or practice certain skills.

What skills are covered in the Scuba Skills Update course?

The course typically covers basic skills like equipment setup and check, mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy control, finning techniques and emergency procedures. Skills can vary slightly by instructor and diver needs.

It’s not mandatory but is highly recommended if you’ve been inactive for a while. Many dive operators require or suggest a refresher for divers who haven’t dived in the past 18 – 24 months.

Plus, if we see you are progressing with your skill refresher quickly, we can go for a dive at the end.
