The SSI Enriched Air Nitrox Diving course is one of the most important courses in your diving career. It will help you dive safer and stay longer at greater depths.
Enriched air is a breathing mixture that has more oxygen and less nitrogen. This makes you feel better and dive safer, because you minimize the chance of decompression sickness.
Our SSI Enriched Air Nitrox Diving course in Gozo consists of a knowledge part and a practical part on land. Diving is not required, although you are of course encouraged to do so.
The knowledge part is based on an accessible digital manual that you can read on your computer or in an app on your phone. We can make it available to you even before you arrive to give you more time to process the knowledge.
Each chapter of the manual ends with review questions to help you find out if you understand everything you need in order to safely dive on nitrox. Besides, you will also have our instructors to discuss the most important issues with you and clarify any doubts in a single lecture. You will learn to plan safe dives with enriched air (nitrox), paying attention to the no-decompression limits, maximum dive depth, and amount of breathing gas. Finally, you’ll take a short exam, which you can do in the app when you are ready.
During a short workshop at the dive centre, you will learn how to properly analyze the gas in the cylinder with a special device, as well as calibrate it to get the most accurate measurement. You will also learn how to change the settings in the dive computer so that it is ready to dive with enriched air nitrox and thus show you longer no-decompression limits.
If you have an extra dive day or dive package with us, we will provide you with one cylinder of nitrox free of charge!
Nitrox is a breathing gas with a higher oxygen content than regular air, typically between 22% and 40%. It is also known as Enriched Air.
Nitrox allows for longer bottom times and reduces the risk of decompression sickness, enhancing dive safety. Many people also feel better and less tired after a dive with nitrox.
Nitrox has a higher percentage of oxygen and lower percentage of nitrogen compared to air, offering extended no-decompression limits.
Yes, when used within established safety guidelines and after proper training, nitrox is considered safe for recreational diving. Furthermore, several studies show that diving with nitrox is statistically safer than with air.
Recreational divers can use the same equpment for nitrox diving as they use for diving with air. Technical divers do require specific equipment, as they usually use nitrox with much higher oxygen content, between 40% and 99% or in some cases even pure oxygen.
Yes, but divers need specialized training to understand the risks associated with breathing higher concentrations of oxygen.
While generally safe, divers should be aware of potential risks such as oxygen toxicity and adhere to exposure limits. These topics are covered on every Enriched Air Nitrox Diving course.
Nitrox can reduce the risk of decompression sickness by limiting the amount nitrogen in divers body and allowing for longer no-decompression limits at certain depths.
Mixing nitrox requires specialized training and equipment; recreational divers are advised not to attempt gas blending independently. Gas blending courses are nowadays offered by all major scuba diving organisations.
Nitrox training is offered by all scuba diving organizations and dive centres, covering theoretical knowledge and practical skills for enriched air diving. You can sign up for a nitrox diving course with us!
