What does the SSI Deep Diving course in Gozo look like?

The SSI Deep Diving course in Gozo consists of a knowledge part and 4 deep open water dives.

Knowledge

The knowledge part is based on an accessible digital manual that you can read on your computer or in an app on your mobile phone. We can make it available to you even before you arrive to give you more time to process the knowledge.

Each chapter of the manual ends with review questions to help you know if you understand everything. In addition, you also have our instructors to discuss the most important issues with you and clarify any doubts. You will learn how to plan safe dives up to 40m, paying attention to no-decompression time and the amount of breathing gas. Finally, you will have to take an exam, which you can do in the app, when you are ready.

Practice

During 4 recreational dives we will teach you all the skills necessary for safe deep diving. We will work on your diving position under water and your gas consumption. Together, we will be monitoring the remaining no-decompression limits and end each dive with launching an SMB. The maximum depth will change gradually with each dive so as to reach 40m on the last day.

During your two course dives, we will give you a complimentary Nitrox 28 to see how much your no-decompression limit will increase. If you don’t already have an enriched air diving certificate, we can conduct such a course in parallel.

Why learn with Blue Hole Diving Gozo?

Frequently Asked Questions about the SSI Deep Diving Course

What is a deep diving course?

A deep diving course is specialised scuba training that teaches divers the skills and safety procedures required for depths up to 40 mteres (130 feet). There are several diving agencies offering this kind of programme. At Blue Hole Diving Gozo we teach the SSI Deep Diving course.

Why take a deep diving course?

Deep diving courses provide essential knowledge and skills to safely explore depths up to 40 mteres (130 feet), enhancing a diver’s capabilities and experience. You will learn how to plan and safely conduct deep dives with an equally or higher qualified dive buddy.

How deep is considered 'deep' in diving?

Depths beyond 18 meters (60 feet) are generally considered deep in recreational diving, requiring specific training. However, you must remember that the limit of recreational diving and for a deep diving course is 40m (130 feet).

Is deep diving more dangerous?

Deep diving poses additional risks, such as nitrogen narcosis and reduced air supply, making specialised training crucial for safety. We recommend completing the SSI Deep Diving course to anyone who wants to dive deeper than 30 metres (100 ft).

What equipment is needed for deep diving?

Deep diving requires standard scuba gear. Since you will be diving close to non-decompression limits, you must have a dive computer. We also recommend a diving torch/flashlight, because the deeper you go, the less natural light you can expect.

Can anyone take a deep diving course?

With SSI, all you need is your Open Water Diver certification from any recognised agency. Most agencies require divers to also have an advanced open water certification before enrolling in a deep diving course. However, at Blue Hole Diving Gozo we recommend to have at least 20 dives prior to enrolling onto the SSI Deep Diving Course.

Are there age restrictions for deep diving courses?

Age requirements vary depending on scuba diving agency. However, divers are generally required to be at least 15 to 18 years old to enroll in a deep diving course. With SSI the minimum ages is 15 years.

How long does a deep diving course take?

Deep diving courses typically involve classroom sessions and three to four open water dives. They usually take two, rarely three days. At Blue Hole Diving Gozo we offer four deep dives included in the course price.

What skills are taught in a deep diving course?

Skills include planning deep dives, managing air supply, managing nitrogen narcossis, dealing with increased pressure and emergency procedures specific to deep-water environments.

Can I dive deep without a course?

While possible, diving beyond 18 metres (60 feet) without proper training is highly discouraged due to increased risks. A deep diving course enhances safety and competence.
